Meet Jack Leiter’s Dad, Al Leiter: From Mets Pitcher to Broadcaster

Date:

The talented new 23 year-old pitcher for the Texas Rangers, Jack Leiter, recently made his MLB debut, three years after being drafted as the second overall in first round of 2021 MLB drafts. His pitch was historic for many reasons, but mostly due to his dad, who turned out to be a former pitcher and a multiple World Series winner. Let’s dig deeper and find out more about this father and son duo.

Who Is The Renowned Father Of Jack Leiter?

Jack Leiter’s dad is the current broadcaster for MLB network and the former professional baseball player who pitched for 19 seasons for multiple organizations like the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Florida Marlins, and New York Mets.

During his tenure from 1987 to 2005 he made a name for himself due to his unstoppable left-handed pitches that helped him become a two-time National League (NL) All-Star player, win three World Series titles and even threw an impeccable no-hitter in 1996 for the first time in the Florida Marlins franchise history.

Al Leiter And Jack Leiter’s Close Relation

Coming out of Vanderbilt University, Jack was a highly touted pitcher with a chip on his shoulder due to his father’s legacy and last name. During his collegiate career he became a two-time All-American and led the Commodores to the 2021 College World Series.

Al Leiter, Jack’s dad, functioned as his role model, mentor and a pillar of support that immensely helped him carve his own path and style using a blend of his father’s vying tenacity and his mother’s zen-like demeanor.

As Al recalled during an interview that “ He’s got a good arm. I never knew the kid loved it, when I was playing with the Mets, he(Jack) always had a ball in his hand, always had a glove and we’d go to the park”. He also emphasized that he didn’t just lick it off rocks and it’s in his blood, mentioning “ We pitch, we are pitchers ”.

Conclusion

As of late, the legendary pitcher turned broadcaster, Al Leiter, has stepped into the landscape of politics by showing interest in running for political office as a Republican in his home state of New Jersey. Aside from serving as a member of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s transition team and being a member of the New Jersey Sports, Gaming, and Entertainment Committee, he’s been one of the big donors to GOP candidates like Donald Trump, Lindsey Graham, Chris Christie, and Rudy Giuliani. Well a man needs something to do after retirement, especially after all the kids have moved out of the house.
