Jay Norvell, also known as Merritt James Norvell III was born on March 28, 1963, in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. He is a known college football coach in the United States. Currently, he is serving as the head football coach at Colorado State University since the 2022 season. Prior to that from 2017 to 2021 he held the position at the University of Nevada Reno. Norvell’s football career started when he played as a linebacker for the Chicago Bears in the NFL back in 1987. Norvell grew up in a neighborhood in Madison. He went to Madison West High School. Participated in football and basketball. He was also part of the National Honor Society.

Once he finished school Norvell joined the University of Iowa where he played football for the Hawkeyes from 1982 to 1985. During his time he played as a back and wide receiver. Additionally, he was part of the Iowa track team.

After completing his studies at Iowa Norvell was signed by the Chicago Bears as an agent. He had a season, with the Bears in 1987. Was later let go by the team.

His remarkable performance earned him the distinction of being selected. Ten twice with the additional honor of being named the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year in 1985. Furthermore, Jay played a role in helping the Hawkeyes secure victory in the Big Ten championship and earn a spot, in the Rose Bowl tournament in 1985. To commemorate his achievements Jay Norvell received a deserved induction into the Iowa Football Ring of Honor in 2018.

Jay Norvell’s NFL career was brief. He was signed as a free agent by the Chicago Bears in 1987 and played one season for the team. He appeared in six games and recorded one tackle.

Norvell was released by the Bears in 1988 and retired from professional football.

Norvell briefly spent time in the NFL as an assistant coach from 2002 to 2006 with the Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders before returning to college football at the University of Nebraska to take his first-ever offensive coordinator job in 2004.

After two seasons at Nebraska, Norvell moved to Oklahoma as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach from 2007 to 2010. He then spent the next four seasons as the wide receivers coach at UCLA before being hired as the head coach at Nevada in 2017.

In his five seasons at Nevada, Norvell compiled an overall record of 33-26, which included four bowl appearances and two bowl victories. He was also named the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year in 2021.

In December 2021, Norvell was hired as the head coach at Colorado State. He is the first Black head coach in program history.

Norvell is a disciple of the Air Raid offense, which is known for its fast-paced, pass-happy attack. He has a reputation for developing quarterbacks and wide receivers.

Norvell is still relatively early in his head coaching career, but he has already shown flashes of brilliance. He is a talented offensive coach who has a knack for getting the most out of his players.
