MMA is a brutal game, and players try to get whatever advantage they can over their opponents. One of the hardest and legal ways to do it is to cut down your weight.
In the UFC, fighters are divided into different weight divisions. By cutting weight, fighters can fight in a lower division, where they will have a size advantage.
Let's examine some of the hardest weight cuts in UFC history, and the advantage fighters gained from it.
YOEL ROMERO
Remembered as one of the greatest middleweights in UFC history, Yoel Romero's natural weight is around 210 pounds. He has had to undergo severe weight cuts to 185 pounds several times.
The Heavyweight fighter may have a small frame, but his weight is around 250 pounds. However, for most of his career he fought at 205 pound
MIZUTO HIROTA
Lightweight fighter struggled to make 145 pounds. Video of him on scale was scary, needed help to get on/off.
MAX HOLLOWAY
Both fans and officials have frequently expressed alarm about Holloway's weight loss. Still most argue he is the best Featherweight in the division, going strong at 145 pounds.
Arguably the biggest star inside and outside the octagon, it is absolutely mind-boggling that he had to cut down to 145 pounds to rise in ranks the way he did.
