9 Naruto Characters that Are Inspired by Folklore and Mythology

Naruto series was inspired by legendary Japanese Tales. Here are the 9 characters inspired by folklore and mythology.

NARUTO UZUMAKI

Naruto Uzumaki is based on a Japanese folktale about the Tanuki, a mischievous raccoon dog with shapeshifting skills. There are quite a few similarities between the two.

SASUKE UCHIHA

He is inspired by Susanoo, the Japanese god of storms and the sea. Susanoo is a powerful and destructive god, and Sasuke's Mangekyo Sharingan powers are equally so.

IRAIYA, TSUNADE AND OROCHIMARU

They are based on the Japanese folklore of the Sannin, three mythical warriors noted for their mastery of various ninjutsu.

KAKASHI HATAKE

Momotaro, a peach boy reared by an elderly woman and a monkey, inspired Kakashi Hatake, a Japanese folk hero. Momotaro defeats a horde of demons to defend his tribe.

GAARA

Gaara is inspired by Shukaku, the one-tailed tanuki spirit that resides within him. The Shukaku is a powerful and deadly spirit known for its ability to manipulate sand.

HINATA HYUGA

The Japanese legend of the Hyuga princess, a beautiful princess cursed by a serpent, inspired Hinata Hyuga. In addition, they share many superpower

The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, a Japanese folktale about a princess who was discovered inside a bamboo stalk, served as inspiration for Sakura Haruno. 

YAMATO

Yamato is inspired by Yamato Takeru, a Japanese god & warrior known for bravery & might. He wields sword similar to Yamato's Hiramekarei.

HASHIRAMA SENJU

Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess, inspired Hashirama Senju. She's the most powerful deity, often depicted as a beautiful woman with long hair.
