The UAB Blazers football team represents the University of Alabama, at Birmingham in football. They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Are a part of the American Athletic Conference (The American).

Established in 1991 the UAB football program initially started at the Division III level. It then moved up to Division I AA in 1993. Eventually reached Division I A status in 1996. In 1999 UAB became a member of Conference USA. Joined the American Athletic Conference in 2014.

Despite their history, the Blazers have achieved notable success. They have secured two Conference USA championships (in 2000 and 2004). Have participated in five bowl games. Their recent bowl game appearance took place during the Bahamas Bowl in 2021.

In 2014 financial difficulties led to a disbandment of the UAB football program; however, it was reinstated in 2015. Resumed playing games again from 2017 onwards. Since their return, UAB has made a comeback emerging as one of the performing teams within Conference USA.

They clinched back-to-back Conference USA championships in both 2020 and 2021 while also making appearances, in bowl games during those seasons.

Heading up the UAB Blazers football team is head coach Trent Dilfer, who assumed his position in 2022.

Dilfer used to be a football player, in the NFL. Achieved the remarkable feat of winning a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens back, in 2000.
